We have some time before this becomes an issue, but that fact that folks are not just writing sci-fi books and movies about this topic is telling. I think they can see the very real possibility for machine-level sentience.
In a sense, the evolution of robotics and machine intelligence may be the “natural order” for humans in their evolution. IFF we consider this an inevitability, then the only thing that remains for us to accomplish is how we impart our conscience (soul ?) into the machines BEFORE we destroy ourselves or the machines supersede us.
